Live Streaming & Catch-Up Video for a Scientific Research Charity
Taking an event online during COVID — and keeping it available for years after.
Overview
During COVID, a scientific research charity's in-person event could no longer host its usual attendance. Rather than cancel, they decided to take it online — which meant streaming it live and giving people a way to catch up afterwards if they couldn't attend.
The Challenge
With in-person attendance restricted, the charity needed to move the event online at short notice. That meant live streaming for people watching on the day, plus somewhere for the content to live afterwards for anyone who couldn't attend live. Access also needed to be controlled — this wasn't content they wanted fully public, so viewers needed to log in to watch.
The Solution
We built a microsite for the event, with viewer access controlled through a login system built on AWS IAM. For the live stream itself, we used AWS IVS (Interactive Video Service) — the strongest option on a cost basis for what the charity needed. Once the event finished, the same page stayed up so attendees could watch back on demand.
The Outcome
What started as a one-off response to a single event didn't stop there — off the back of it, the charity kept producing catch-up video content for years afterwards, well beyond the original plan for a single event.
